Membership

Anyone with amateur status is eligible for membership. Continued membership is contingent upon following the rules and etiquette of golf.

CLICK HERE for 2011 Membership Application

For 2011, membership is as follows:

You must purchase a gold card from Ahwatukee golf group ($99). This establishes a basis for the golf portion of our tournament pricing. Exceptions: Annual golf course members, cart members, and eligible employees.

Additionally, the annual membership fee to the Men’s Club is $75. This goes toward operating expenses, website maintenance, match play payouts, and supplementing tournament payouts.

Applications and fees will be collected at the last event of 2010, or the first event you play in 2011.

AGA handicap membership is not required and is not included in the fees noted above. AGA handicap membership is available separately from the golf course pro shop.

Playing by the Rules of Golf

All U.S.G.A. Rules of Golf apply to Men’s Club events. We will waive the 14-club rule for Men’s Club events only (unless other wise stated in a particular event instructions).

Play the golf course “as marked” with the exceptions and clarifications noted below. Please be aware that there is no “DESERT” rule for Club West Men’s Club events. If you lose a ball in the “DESERT”, and it’s not marked Out of Bounds or Hazard, you must proceed under Rule 27 – Lost Ball. If the ball is found, but un-playable, proceed under the rules for that situation.

Lost Ball; Options, add one stroke and:

  1. Go back to where the previous shot was played and play from there

  2. Use a provisional ball that was hit contingent on the ball being lost.

Un-Playable Lie; (three options) add one penalty stroke and:

  1. Go back to where the previous shot was played and play from there

  2. Measure two club-lengths, drop the ball and play from there (no closer to the hole)

  3. Keep the point of the un-playable lie between where you drop the ball and the pin, go back as far as you wish on a straight line, drop and play from there.

Provisional Ball. Provisional ball can be played if you are un-sure if your ball is findable, or out of bounds. You must state you are hitting a provisional ball to your playing group, and state which type of ball each of the original and provisional balls are. Remember, provisional balls are meant to speed up play, used properly, it will.

  • If a provisional ball is hit to account for possible out of bounds condition. If the ball is discovered to be out of bounds or likely to be out of bounds, proceed with the provisional ball, counting the strokes of both shots plus a penalty. If the original ball is found in play, the original ball Must Be Played.

  • If a provisional ball is hit to account for a possible lost ball condition. If the ball is not discovered, proceed with the provisional ball, counting the strokes of both shots plus a penalty. If the original ball is found, the original ball Must be Played.

  • A provisional ball can continue to be played until it has passed the likely place where the original ball (out of bounds or lost) is likely to be. Example: If you try and cut the corner on 16, bounce it off the road and hope it makes it through, you may hit a provisional down the fairway, then again across the rock creek at which time it is likely to be passed the ending point of the first ball. At that time, you must either find the first ball, or play the provisional, counting all shots on the provisional, the original shot, and a penalty stroke.

Lateral Hazard (red lines or stakes)

  1. Play it as it lies (can’t ground your club or improve your stance).

  2. Add penalty stroke and play from the previous location

  3. Drop the ball on the opposite side of the hazard, keeping the point of entry in line with the drop point and the pin. (NOT ALONG THE LINE OF FLIGHT INTO THE HAZARD)

  4. Drop two club lengths from the point of entry, no closer to the hole.

Hazard (yellow lines or stakes)

Relief from cart path.

When on the cart path or up against the edge of the path or curb, you must first find the nearest point of relief, noting that it could be in the rocks or desert. Take your stance at the nearest point of relief, with the club you are likely to use, mark that point, then take one club length relief (may be your driver) and drop within that club length.

Course Markings and Local Rules

Play the golf course as marked with the following clarifications and local rules.

  • Hole 8: Local Men’s Club Rule: at the arroyo crossing, if cables or railroad ties interfere with swing, take the nearest point of relief without penalty.

  • Hole 16: Rock drainage area is marked as hazard (yellow stakes) and left side of second half of the fairway is lateral hazard (red stakes) all other areas are desert.

  • Hole 17: Left side is lateral hazard as marked with red line. Drop two strokes from the point of entry or: Front Green, un-marked drop zone is on the grass at front of the green near the bunker on the left. Back Green, drop zone is on the grass hill left of the cart path. Right side: Options (1) find it and hit it or (2) find it and take un-playable lie, or (3) re-tee hitting 3.

  • Hole 18: The lake is lateral hazard except if the crossing point is over the bunker in front of the green, the drop area is in the grass, left of the bunker, adjacent to the point of entry (no closer to the hole).

Putting Out

NO GIMMES. If you do pick-up for some reason then you are no longer eligible for the individual gross and net games and you take an X for the team game being played (don’t hang your partner out to dry!). You still must record a score for handicap purposes according to the procedures set forth in the equitable stroke control:

Course Handicap ESC Maximum

9 or less Double Bogey

10 – 19 7

20 – 29 8

30 – 39 9

40 and above 10

Handicap

The Men’s Club has it’s own handicap software. Tournament scores will be maintained in this software by the committee. Please continue to post your own scores in the AGA computer. For each tournament, the handicap used will be the Men’s Club Handicap (from tournament scores only).

Men’s Club Handicaps will be calculated based on how many events you’ve played in as follows.

Events Played / Scores Calculated

1/1 2/1 3/1 4/1 5/2 6/2 7/3 8/4

New Members: A new member’s Men’s Club Handicap will not be valid until 3 scores are achieved. Until that time, the lowest of the Men’s Club or another legitimate source (such as AGA) or committee discretion will be used for handicap. Once three scores are reached, only men’s club scores, per the schedule above, will be used to calculate handicap.

Scores will be posted for all individual formats. Even some DNF’s will be posted depending on the number of holes not finished (committee discretion). Other formats:

Scramble: Not posted

Shamble: Not posted

Quota: Individual scores are posted.

Better Ball Formats: Individual scores are posted.

Mixed Tees: Individual scores are posted.

6/6/6: Depends on the individual formats selected. If shamble or scramble are involved, then they will not be posted.

Match Play: Any match play match score will not be posted unless it is conducted within a Men’s Club tournament with a format compatible to posting scores as above.

Participants post their own scores in the AGA handicap system.

Events and Formats

The Men’s Club schedule will explain the events dates and formats. Please be advised that dates, starting times and formats are subject to change. The Men’s Club Committee will do their best to advise Club members of changes.

For individual events, 39 and less players involved, we will have one flight with gross and net payouts.

If we get 40 or more players, we will flight the event into two flights. The flight break point will be chosen to make the flights as even as possible. Each flight will have gross and net payouts.

For team events, there will be one flight. Payouts will be gross and net or as appropriate for the format. Consideration will be given for flighting a team event when enough players participate. This will be determined by the committee.

Course Set – Up / Tee Markers

In an attempt to make being a member of the Men’s Club here at Club West more enjoyable the Men’s Club may use one of any of the 10 different courses defined in previous years by the course professional. Here is a sampling of how the courses might vary:

  • Par can vary from 72 to 67

  • Yardage can vary from 7036 to 5442

  • Slope can vary from 129 to 112

  • Course rating can vary from 72.1 to 65.1

Men’s Club participants play from the Men’s Club Tees (Tan). If no Men’s Club Tees are placed, the default is to use the Blue Tees.

Tournament Entry Fees

Club West Men’s Club will have three different levels of entry fees.

  1. Annual golf course members whom have pre-paid for green fees.

  2. Annual “cart only” golf course members

  3. Regular Participants (not annual golf course members)

Entry Fees are paid directly to the golf course

Entry Fees are inclusive of Green Fee & Cart & Prize Fund

Optional: Gross & Net Skins / Closest to the Pin

Optional: Super Skins

Optional: Hole in One Fund (Hole in one fund is re-started yearly or whenever a hole in one is achieved in a Men’s Club event)

Optional Pins and Skins are to be paid in cash to the Men’s Club Starter (each week)

Optional Super Skins are to be paid in cash to the Men’s Club Starter (each week)

Optional: Hole in One Fund to be paid to the Men’s Club Starter (once per year or when hole in one pot is paid out)

Super Skins: Each tournament, super skin money will be collected to create a growing pot ($1 Gross, $1 Net). You must enter the week you are playing to be eligible regardless of your participation in past events. The super skin hole will be selected separately for Gross and Net at random in the presence of the tournament participants AFTER the tournament is completed. Every hole is eligible starting in 2011. Winner of a skin on that hole the day the hole is selected wins the pot collected to date (gross and net separate pots).

Tiebreakers and Payouts

All awards, except for optional Skins and Pins will be paid out in Golf Shop gift cards. Cards will be handed out after each event. If you are not able to stay for the announcements, the Club Treasurer will retain the payout until the participant plays again.

Ties for Men’s Club Events will be broken as recommended by the United States Golf Association. The tie breaker procedure is as follows: (Gross for gross payouts, net for net payouts)

  1. Compare the BACK SIDE (holes 10 – 18) Total

  2. Compare the LAST 6 holes

  3. Compare the LAST 3 holes

  4. Compare the 18th hole.

  5. Compare the #1 Handicap Hole

Hint: Always play better on holes 10 – 18 as they fall on the scorecard (it is immaterial what hole you start on).

Quarterly Point System

Quarterly Points are awarded to players per the following criteria, and as long as Club West Golf Course continues to offer an annual membership, the points will be used to define 4 players who will play off at the end of the year for the grand prize (similar to the Grand Slam of Golf held at Poipu Bay).

For each Men’s Club event points are awarded for participation, and places first through fourth (team event points are split). The point’s breakdown is as follows:

Place

Individual Events

Two Man Events

Four Man Events

1st

10 Points

6 Points Each

5 Points Each

2nd

9 Points

5 Points Each

4 Points Each

3rd

8 Points

4 Points Each

3 Points Each

4th

7 Points

3 Points Each

2 Points Each

Three (3) participation points are awarded for each event completed.

In the event that the quarterly points are tied at the end of the quarter, each player that is tied will be included in the year end playoff. Players may not repeat as quarterly winner, if the quarterly winner has won a previous quarter, the second place person will win the current quarter.

At the end of the fourth quarter each quarterly points winner will meet for an 18 hole playoff (Net medal play) with the winner receiving the annual membership as offered by Club West.

Handicaps for the final playoff will be frozen at the end of the final event of the year.

Points for Member Guest event. Points will be awarded for member guest tournament based on the overall results (not daily results). Points will be awarded at the rate of per the “two man” schedule above.

Multi-day events such as President’s Cup and Club Championship. Points will be awarded on the overall score for the combined two days.

Club Championship and Eligibility

Each year, approximately in the fourth quarter, a two day tournament will be held to determine the Club Champion (Gross Medal Play). Men’s Club Members must play in at least 3 events to be eligible for this event. Multiple day events count as one event.

Annual Match Play Events (Individual and Team)

There will be two match play events played each year, individual, and team. Each will have a qualifier event. You must play in the qualifier event to be eligible for the match play to follow. Extenuating circumstances may be taken into consideration by the committee. Individual event is slated for 32-64 players depending on participation, the team event is slated for 16-32 teams depending on participation.

Handicaps (indexes) will be published periodically from the Men's Club Handicap data base as match play progresses so that handicaps stay as current as possible..

Payouts are in cash and come from Men’s Club funds.

Matches are arranged between the players involved and any conditions that exist at the time are considered agreed upon by the players involved. Golf prices are as established by the golf course (Gold Card rates).

Individual: Play to the lower of the two handicaps of the two players involved. Therefore, if Player A is a 5 handicap, and Player B is a 10 handicap, then Player A give Player B 5 strokes on the first 5 handicap holes.

Payouts for individual are generally 4 places.

Team: This is a two man better ball (net) match player. Play to the lowest handicap of the four players. Make that player a zero handicap and subtract his handicap from the rest of the players. Assign the remaining 3 players strokes starting with the number 1 handicap hole, and so on.

Example 1. Player A (5), Player B (12) Player C (8) Player D (20) zero out player A and subtract 5 from each of the remaining players.

Player A(0)

Player B (7)

Player C (3)

Player D (15)

Example 2. Player A (+2), Player B (8) Player C (20), Player D (22). Add 2 strokes to get Player A to zero, add 2 to each of the remaining players.

Player A (0)

Player B (10)

Player C (22)

Player D (24)

Payouts for team match play are generally 2 places.
